More good news about farm animal welfare: figures just out show that the amount of Freedom Food labelled pork has risen by 200% since 2009. Almost 1 million more pigs are now reared to RSPCA welfare standards on Freedom Food approved farms compared to three years ago.

A new video launched today at the European Seafood Expo in Brussels aims to show other markets the benefits of including higher animal welfare practices as part of their business strategy for fish farming. Using the RSPCA's Freedom Food scheme as an example of how the Scottish salmon farming industry has made great strides in improving welfare - and quality - the researchers hope other markets will consider improving their animal welfare standards too.

The RSPCA’s higher animal welfare assurance scheme Freedom Food plays a vital part in delivering better lives to tens of millions of farmed animals in the UK. The RSPCA is eager to see how the scheme can be made even more effective and sustainable. To that end, the RSPCA has commissioned an independent, expert review of the Freedom Food scheme. The review will take place over coming months and expects to report its recommendations later in the year.
